Valuable hands-on learning in class

Group projects have definitely been the most valuable in-the-classroom hands-on learning opportunities for me. They’ve allowed me to collaborate with other students toward a shared goal and create something we’re truly proud of. The most impactful group project I have worked on so far has been my senior design project, where my team is designing a chemical manufacturing plant using process simulation software. This project has given us the chance to combine everything we’ve learned over the past four years into one cohesive and functional design, which has been both rewarding and exciting.

Valuable out-of-the-classroom experience

The most valuable out-of-classroom hands-on learning experiences I’ve had have been through my co-ops and internship. My first co-op at Amcor Flexibles introduced me to the real-world engineering environment, where I learned how to apply problem-solving skills beyond the classroom. My internship at Nestlé was a great opportunity to see how technical principles translate into product performance and quality, and it showed me the wide range of industries that chemical engineers can contribute to. My most recent co-op at LyondellBasell was particularly impactful, as it allowed me to apply chemical engineering concepts like reactions, separations, and thermodynamics on an industrial scale. These experiences not only expanded my technical knowledge but also gave me clarity about the type of work I want to do after graduation.

Most influential mentor

My most influential mentor at Iowa State was Matt Brown, my academic advisor. He was incredibly supportive and always encouraged me to pursue my goals, no matter how challenging they seemed. Matt went above and beyond to help me navigate my academic path, ensuring I could achieve everything I wanted to do while still graduating in four academic years. His guidance and belief in my potential made a significant impact on my Iowa State experience!

Best memory/greatest accomplishment

My best memory at Iowa State was participating in the five-week summer program in Oviedo, Spain, where I completed my chemical engineering unit operations laboratory. It was a unique academic and cultural experience shared with many of my close chemical engineering friends from Iowa State. I had the opportunity to immerse myself in another culture, explore a new country, and gain a global perspective on engineering through plant tours and hands-on work with local professors and lab technicians. It was an unforgettable experience that combined academic growth, meaningful connections, and cultural exploration.

I will work as a process engineer for Sargent & Lundy.

Support from Engineering Career Services

Engineering Career Services played a huge role in helping me prepare for and find both my co-ops and full-time job. I got both of my co-ops through the Engineering Career Fair, which gave me the chance to connect with companies I hadn’t even heard of before. These experiences helped me build industry experience and strengthen my resume, which ultimately led to securing a full-time position. The Career Fair was also a great way to practice networking and build meaningful connections with industry professionals.

Making my mark on the world

As an engineer, I want to make a difference by finding ways to create more sustainable solutions that address environmental challenges. By combining my technical knowledge with international experiences, I hope to contribute to developing innovative, eco-friendly technologies that improve communities and promote sustainability on a global scale.

Engineering like a Cyclone Engineer

To me, engineering “like a Cyclone Engineer” means embracing every opportunity to grow, both technically and personally, through unique experiences. What makes the Iowa State engineering experience so special is the incredible support for hands-on learning beyond the classroom. I’ve been able to study abroad in Ireland for a semester, participate in a national student exchange semester in Hawaii, complete my chemical engineering unit operations lab during a five-week program in Spain, and even take part in a two-week sustainability program in Iceland through The GREEN Program. These experiences gave me the chance to explore different cultures, adapt to new learning environments, and see the world through the lens of an engineer. That global perspective, paired with the strong academic foundation, is what makes being a Cyclone Engineer truly unique!

What I’d tell my younger self about Iowa State

If I could talk to my younger self, I’d say that choosing Iowa State was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, not just for the academics, but for everything beyond the classroom. I came here expecting to take classes and earn a degree, but I ended up growing so much more than I ever imagined. I discovered who I am, built lifelong friendships, found new hobbies, and gained a better understanding of what I want to do with my life. Through opportunities like studying abroad and getting involved on campus, I’ve grown culturally, personally, and professionally!

Most inspiring location on campus

One place on campus where I feel especially inspired as a Cyclone Engineer is the Sweeney computer lab. I’ve spent countless hours there working on my senior design project, which constantly pushes me to apply everything I’ve learned throughout my chemical engineering courses. It’s a space that challenges me to problem-solve, think critically, and collaborate with others.
